How to Open a Can of Paint

If you have never opened a can of paint, you have come to the right place. We will show you exactly how to get started.

For Best Results:

Use a paint key to open your can of paint as it is specially designed for this task. Although other tools may work, they may warp the can lid and prevent proper closure and storage.

Suggested Tools & Supplies
  • BEHR® Paint

  • Paint Key

  • Step 1

    Grab your tools.

  • Step 2

Holding the paint can firmly, shake the can up and down and side to side as hard as you can for 15-20 seconds.

  • Step 3

Grab your paint key and dig the tip of the key into the groove of the can. Push down and the can lid will lift. Continue this step until you circle the whole can.

  • Step 4

Lift the lid off of the can.
