Dear Sir/Madame,
i have a new reddwood deck, i would like to preserve the look for many years to come.
do i need to stain the deck before applying further coats to preserve the appearance which i see now.

Is it ok to stain decks in full sun? One year my deck was stained in the hot sun & it stayed sticky for a few years!

Staining decks under direct sunlight isn’t advised as it can lead to rapid drying, resulting in uneven absorption, streaks, and a less durable finish. It’s better to stain decks early in the morning, late afternoon, or when shaded to ensure proper drying and absorption.

My older treated wood deck was done with behr semi-transparent stain 5 years ago and still has about 80% coverage. But there are boards that have lost some coverage. I just power washed it and would like to recoat with the same as I used before. Will this end up well without stripping first? I am not excited about the prospect of going through a stripping process.

After power washing, recoating might be feasible. It’s advisable to test a small section beforehand to ensure the new coat adheres well and matches in color. While stripping is labor-intensive, it may be necessary for a completely uniform finish, especially in areas with uneven weathering. If the deck is in good enough condition, lightly sanding rough patches before recoating could also improve the final appearance.
